The GTS is an immigration program created to assist Canadian employers in hiring highly-skilled tech talent from around the world. GTS work permits have expedited processing times and can be valid for up to 3 years. The GTS has a 2 stage process:

What is a LMIA?

A Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) is a document issued by Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC) that allows a Canadian employer to hire a foreign worker. Once the employer is issued a positive LMIA, the foreign worker is eligible to apply for a work permit.

What is an LMBP?

A Labor Market Benefits Plan (LMBP) is a commitment by the employer to a number of activities that they will participate in for the duration of the foreign worker's employment. Examples include:

  • Investment in skills and training for Canadian and Permanent Residents
  • Job Creation
  • Knowledge Transfer by directly training
  • Increase in work-place diversity;
  • Enhance company performance by hiring the TFW.

Advantages of the Global Talent Stream program
  • Expedited processing time for LMIA and work permit applications
  • The foreign worker is eligible to apply for Canadian Express Class (Express Entry) for Permanent Residence after 12 months of Canadian work experience
  • Accompanying family members are entitled to apply for applicable permits for the same duration as the foreign worker’s permit.

What type of work permit does the foreign worker receive?

The candidate will receive a closed work permit. Under a closed work permit, the candidate is only permitted to work for a single Canadian employer. A change in employer will require a new LMIA application

How long is the work permit valid?

Depending on the needs of the Canadian employer, the work permit issued can be valid for 2-3 years.

What about the family of the foreign worker?

Spouses and common-law partners are eligible to receive an open work permit for the same duration as the foreign worker.Dependents will either be issued a visitors visa or a study permit depending on their age. Even as a visitor, children can attend school at no fee.
